First Mile Blog Post: Why I decided to pursue a Software Engineering Career.
Hello, My name is Joshua Burger. My decision to pursue software engineering all started in my early years of a teenager. As a teen, I was always interested in computers. I always wondered how every part worked, and how they were built. I was really fascinated by the components you could swap, in and out of your machine. Also, how it would increase the performance.. or how fast i can make my machine process information. I got my first job when i was around the age of 16. I worked there for a few months to collect some pocket change, and get out of the house. After i collected some money, I started teaching myself how to start building my own computer.
After teaching myself everything, my passion for computers and tech went blooming. Over the years I graduated high school, and moved onto the real world. After high school, I got into a pretty decent job at a bakery where i spent a few years. I switched jobs in-between lay offs, and closings. As i was working and being a father of 3 kids, I didn’t really have the time to sit down at my computer and learn more. Ive always had the itch to get back into the tech world and pursue a career. So when my company notified me that they were closing, I knew I had to change my career.
I remember sitting at my computer; looking up computer jobs and what is in the IT field.. other than just the college route. When i came across being a software engineer, I started doing my own research. That then landed me on the flatiron website. I told myself that this is what i wanted to pursue as my new career. I have a passion for computers, and learning new information. This career just connected for me, so i started learning my first code on Code Academy. As i was progressing threw the information, I started working on the Flatiron Prerequisites. A couple weeks later, i applied to Flatiron and went through the interview. As i waited anxiously , i got notified i was accepted.. I couldn't be any happier!
This blog is one of the requirements within the first mile, as we are closing in on the end of my first week I absolutely love it. Im very excited to see what is coming in the future of my new software engineering career.
